Life of Shirdi Saibaba

Shri Sai Baba's life and teachings are well documented in Sai Satcharitra by Shri Hemadpant in Marathi which was personally blessed by Shri Sai Baba. Shri Hemadpant got Shri Sai Baba's blessings in 1910 to write this work. Said Shri Sai Baba "Let him make a collection of stories and experiences, keep notes and memos; I will help him. He is only an outward instrument." Subsequently SaiSatcharitra has been translated into a number of different languages. The one in English is called Shri Sai Satcharitra by Shri Nagesh Vasudev Gunaji. As an introduction this is a short summary on the life of Shri Sai Baba.

Chandbhai, the headman of a village called Dhoopkhede (in Aurangabad, India), once lost his horse and was looking for it. Suddenly he heard a voice say "You look tired. Come here and rest a while". He turned around and saw a young Fakir (Baba). The fakir smiled at him and said "What are you looking for in this jungle, Chandbhai". This surprised Chandbhai and he wondered how the fakir knew his name. Slowly, he said "I have lost my horse. I have looked for it everywhere, but cannot seem to find it". The fakir told him to look behind a clump of trees.

Chandbhai was pleasently surprised to find his horse grazing peacefully behind those trees. He thanked the fakir and asked his name. The fakir said "some people call me Sai Baba." Sai Baba then invited Chandbhai to have a smoke with him. He got the pipe ready, but there was no fire to light it with. Sai Baba thrusted a pair of tongs into the ground and brought out a burning coal. To this Chandbhai was wonderstruck. He thought "this is no ordinary person" and invited

Baba to come to his house and be his guest for a few days. Next day Baba went to Chandbhai's house and found everybody in a very joyful mood and festivities going on all around. He found that Chandbhai's wife's nephew was getting married. The bride was from Shirdi and the marriage party was going to Shirdi. Chandbhai invited Baba to accompany the marriage party to Shirdi.

At Shirdi they camped in a field next to Khandoba's temple. After the wedding, Saibaba stayed on at Shirdi. At first he lived under a neem tree and begged for food whenever he needed it. He then went to Khandoba's temple, intending to stay there, but the temple's priest met him at the entrance and told him to go to the mosque. That is how Baba, started staying at the Mosque which was later called Dwarkamayi. Baba preached at Shirdi all his life and performed numerous miracles to convince people that God exists.

He healed people's diseases, provided moral and material comfort to his Devotees. Baba helped bring Unity and Harmony between all communities. He said that God is one, but called by different names. One day a rich millionaire named Booty came to Sai Baba and said he was going to construct a stone building for Shri Krishna. Baba helped him plan the building. Before the building was completed Baba fell very ill.

On the 15th of October 1918, he breathed his last. His last wish was to be buried in Booty's building. Booty's stone building came to be known as Samadhi Mandir. Shri Sai Baba was buried here and a beautiful shrine was built over it. To this day, people flock to Shirdi to pay homage to Shri Sai Baba.

                 Mahavatar Babaji

In the year 203 A. D. boy Nagaraj was born in what is now the seaport town of Porto Novo on the eastern coast of India. While still a youth he was kidnapped by a Pathan and taken north to Dacca. He was later released and migrated to Benares where he shone as a Sanskrit scholar of great eminence.
Discontent with this early success and destined for a greater end, he sailed by boat to the powerful shrine of Katarigama on the southern coast of Lanka. For 18 months he plunged into meditation where, with his astute intellect, he analyzed the different philosophical systems threadbare. Drawing inspiration from the great Siddha of Science, Boganathar, he was able to appreciate and understand the full significance of Siddhantha Yoga and Soruba Samadhi and he accepted the challenge of attaining this mystic goal, supreme.
Following the inner call, he wondered throughout South India and was extremely fortunate to be initiated into the mysteries of Kundalini Yoga by the great Tamil Siddha, Agastya Maharishi at Courtrallam.
Now retiring to a lonely Himalayan cave, he remained absorbed in intensive Yogic sadhana for years at a stretch, finally to emerge LAUGHING AT THE LIMITATIONS OF DEATH.

The immortal Babaji made his own contributions to the nucleus given by Sage Agastya, renamed it "Kriya", and has retained his form through the centuries tapping many, speaking to few and materializing to give darshan to his saintly chosen. For centuries he worked behind the scenes as the source of inspiration and guidance to past Kriya Masters like Adi Shankara, Kabir Das, Lahi Mahasaya and many others.

Thus He is the climax of the Eighteen Tamil Yoga Siddhas tradition, which includes Thirumoolar, Ramadevar, Kumbamuni, Konkanavar, Sattamuni, Karoovurar, Sundaranandar, Valmiki, NandiDevar, Paambati, Boganathar, Macchamuni Patanjali, Dhanvanthri, Goraknath, Kudambai, Idaikadar and Kamala Muni.

In the year 1944 Kriya Babaji felt the need for a society in his name through which he could contact his devotees the world over. International Babaji Yoga Sangam came into existence and Yogi S.A.A. Ramaiah, the direct disciple of Sathguru Babaji, has continued to spread the Science of Kriya Yogam to the nooks and corners of the earth, giving initiation and training to sincere seekers of Truth.

Through the Omnipotent Grace and assistance of Kriya Babaji, 50 world-wide branches of this international organization have been established and, as directed by the great Sathguru, development of an International Tamil Kriya Yoga University is being planned.

The university will apply scientific methods and laboratory procedure to ancient formulae embedded in the literary works of the Yoga Siddhas. International Babaji Yoga Sangam has the largest collection of these rare "edus" in the whole world which will be deciphered with the light of Kriya Yoga, and the scientific genius of the Yoga Siddhas will become recognized and appreciated the world over.

International Babaji Yoga Sangam fervently appeals to sympathizers of this divine work to lend their support, financial, manual, and moral, in helping us make this dream of Kriya Babaji a physical reality: Such self sacrifice ensures that the Light of Truth will burn Forever and Anon!

There are two distinct ways of life - materialistic and spiritualistic. The former is mainly physical and followed extensively in the Western hemisphere and the latter is mainly mystic, prevalent in the Eastern hemisphere. Occidental materialism denies the independent existence of spirit and maintains that there is but one substance -MATTER. Oriental spiritualism, on the other hand, emphasizes that the spirit (or soul clothed with the sheaths of the mind) has a real, perhaps the only lasting existence apart from matter. The core of materialism is science, the quest of material TRUTH with the aid of a laboratory, while the core of spiritualism is Mysticism, the scientific art of realizing eternal TRUTH (Creator or Soul, call it what you may) and its message.

These two ways of life, one harping only on the creation and the other the Creator, are incomplete and the pages of history have proved beyond doubt their inadequacy to solve the vital problems of life and usher in the millennium. The scientific West has mastered the forces of the physical plane but is yet not happy, groping in the dark for PEACE, material and mental. On the other hand the mystic East which has produced Buddhas, Christs, Ramakrishnas and Sages has badly neglected the material aspect of existence to be subjugated and exploited by powerful material nations and denied their birthright of freedom which has prevented them for centuries from playing their rightful part in deciding the destiny of the globe.

It is with pleasure we note the change for the better in world thought today. The impact of western materialism on eastern spiritualism is profound and deep. Oriental politics is waking up from its age long slumber and westerners have started sitting meekly at the feet of mystic Masters in quest of eternal peace and bliss. Very slowly but steadily the world is taking to SCIENTIFIC MYSTICISM which is another name for Kriya Yoga.

Kriya Yoga, the most ancient system of Yoga, has been practiced as part of Siva Yoga Siddhantham through the ages, immemorial. It was revived by Kriya Babaji about 1794 years back. Kriya Yoga is a five-fold path of Kriya Hatha Yogum, Kriya Vasi Yogum (pranayam), Kriya Dhyana Yogum (meditation), Kriya Mantra Yogum and Kriya Bhakti Yogum ( the Yoga of Love and Devotion). It is, in short, the gospel of Kriya Mulaguru Babaji Nagaraj as practiced and preached by International Babaji Yoga Sangam. There is only one Guru in the Kriya Yoga Order and that is Sathguru Kriya Babaji, and hence it is called the Babaji Yoga Sangam.

Kriya, the Gospel of Scientific Mysticism, is not a creed or cult but an integral WAY OF LIFE, leading to all-round development- mystic, mental, and physical.
Jnana means knowledge, mystic and material, and refers to Kriya philosophy. The proper outlook and mental background are essential for progress, otherwise the precious teachings of the Kriya Yogi will go to waste and fail to sprout like seeds sowed in barren ground. The flower-bed must be tilled and prepared to yield the beautiful blossoms of Kriya. Hence the aspirant must necessarily pass through the none-to-pleasant preliminary stage of being examined, studied, and trained by the Guru before being accepted.
Mantras are sacred formulae meant to be repeated over and over again; that is japa. The sadhak will have to chant these mantras till the end in view is attained to the satisfaction of the master. Mantra Sastra is a vast, scientific art with different-grades or steps.

After one attains mantra siddhi (perfection) one is fit for Dhyana and the aspirant is led step by step into the deeper mysteries of concentration to realize God and attain perfection.
The fourth facet of this soul-stirring Gospel is Kriya Kundalini Pranayam, a form of Raja Yoga which has been in existence for centuries and the technique varies from master to master. Receiving the nucleus from Agasthya Maharishi at Shakti Peatam, Courtrallam, South India, Kriya Babaji has become an adept and made His original contributions to the scientific art during His long sojourn at Badrinath, Himalayas.

This Kriya technique should not be published and given recklessly for it is a double edged weapon. If practiced under an able experienced master the benefits are immense, otherwise it is definitely dangerous and harmful, hence it is kept a secret to be received from the Guru in private. Further, to begin with, only a simple preliminary initiation will be given and after the aspirant has been made fit through arduous sadhana he or she will be taught the advanced techniques.

The last phase and climax of the sadhana is Sathguru Dheeksha (initiation and blessing by the Sathguru). A Guru (master) is one who has realized God and can dispel the darkness of ignorance. He can show the path to God whereas a Sathguru like KRIYA BABAJI of the Himalayas can actually show God to a fit disciple with a touch, glance, or mere wish. In the final stages the Kriya sadhak may reach the goal with one leap after receiving Sathguru Dheeksha.

With the blessings of the Kriya Mulaguru, International Babaji Yoga Sangam was founded to propagate this five-fold path of Kriya Yoga. As directed by the Master it was established on October 17, 1952 to spread far and wide the Light of Kriya for the emancipation of suffering humanity.
Irrespective of caste, creed and nationality anybody can become a member who would accept Sathguru Babaji as their ideal and SEEK BABAJI TO BECOME A BABAJI.

All aspirants will be tested thoroughly before being accepted by the great master (patience and self-sacrifice are indispensable for success) but if one manages to win His omnipotent Grace it will be found, through experience, to be one of the greatest blessings human beings can aspire for. Then the Sathguru will chalk out a distinct course of sadhana for the disciple taking into full consideration his past, the previous sadhana, and temperament.

The eminence of the Kriya Mulaguru lies in the fact that His Kriya is not a dull, flat path applied with monotonous uniformity to all, but varied from person to person according to their tastes and fitness. Some become mantra sadhaks (that is, the emphasis is more on mantras), some shine as karma yogis and a few are guided along the path of Kriya Hatha Yoga and so on. All are Overcome to share the mystic treasures of Babaji's Kriya Yoga through International Babaji Yoga Sangam.

  • Swami Vivekananda

  • 2. Swami Vivekananda Born 12 January 1863 Kolkata, West Bengal, India Died 4 July 1902 Belur Math near Kolkata
  • 3. Birth and early life Narendranath Dutta was born in Shimla Pally, Kolkata, West Bengal, India on January 12, 1863 as the son of Viswanath Dutta and Bhuvaneswari Devi. Even as he was young, he showed a precocious mind and keen memory. He practiced meditation from a very early age. While at school, he was good at studies, as well as games of various kinds. He organised an amateur theatrical company and a gymnasium and took lessons in fencing, wrestling, rowing and other sports.
  • 4. He also studied instrumental and vocal music. He was a leader among his group of friends. Even when he was young, he questioned the validity of superstitious customs and discrimination based on caste and religion. In 1879, Narendra entered the Presidency College, Calcutta for higher studies. After one year, he joined the Scottish Church College, Calcutta and studied philosophy. During the course, he studied western logic, western philosophy and history of European nations.
  • 5. Questions started to arise in young Narendra's mind about God and the presence of God. This made him associate with the Brahmo Samaj, an important religious movement of the time, led by Keshab Chandra Sen. But the Samaj's congregational prayers and devotional songs could not satisfy Narendra's zeal to realise God. He would ask leaders of Brahma Samaj whether they have seen God. He never got a satisfying answer. It was during this time that Professor Hastie of Scottish Church College told him about Sri Ramakrishna of Dakshineswar.
  • 6. `
  • 7. With Ramakrishna Narendra met Ramakrishna for the first time in November 1881. He asked Ramakrishna the same old question, whether he had seen God. The instantaneous answer from Ramakrishna was, "Yes, I see God, just as I see you here, only in a much intenser sense." Narendra was astounded and puzzled. He could feel the man's words were honest and uttered from depths of experience. He started visiting Ramakrishna frequently.
  • 8. Though Narendra could not accept Ramakrishna and his visions, he could not neglect him. It had always been in Narendra's nature to test something thoroughly before he could accept it. He tested Ramakrishna to the maximum, but the master was patient, forgiving, humorous, and full of love. He never asked Narendra to abandon reason, and he faced all of Narendra's arguments and examinations with infinite patience.
  • 9. In time, Narendra accepted Ramakrishna, and while he accepted, his acceptance was whole-hearted. While Ramakrishna predominantly taught duality and Bhakti to his other disciples, he taught Narendra the Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy of non-dualism. During the course of five years of his training under Ramakrishna, Narendra was transformed from a restless, puzzled, impatient youth to a mature man who was ready to renounce everything for the sake of God-realization.
  • 10. Soon, Ramakrishna's end came in the form of throat cancer in August 1886. After this Narendra and a core group of Ramakrishna's disciples took vows to become monks and renounce everything, and started living in a supposedly haunted house in Baranagore. They took alms to satisfy their hunger and their other needs were taken care of by Ramakrishna's richer householder disciples.
  • 11. Sri Ramakrishna passed away in 1886, leaving the responsibilities of his disciples on Narendra. Under the leadership of Narendra, a few disciples renounced everything in order to live God-centered lives and to carry on the work of their Master. Narendra became Swami Vivekananda. After traveling all over India, following his vision at Kanyakumari, he decided to come to America in 1893. He represented the ancient Hindu religion in the Parliament of Religions. The very first talk of Swami Vivekananda made him known to the whole world.
  • 12. Wanderings in India Soon, the young monk of Baranagore wanted to live the life of a wandering monk with rags and a begging bowl and no other possessions. On July 1890, Vivekananda set out for a long journey, without knowing where the journey would take him. The journey that followed took him to the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent. During these days, Vivekananda assumed various names like Vividishananda (in Sanskrit, Vividisha means "the desire to know" and Ananda means "bliss"), Satchidananda, etc.,
  • 13. It is said that he was given the name Vivekananda by Maharaja of Khetri for his discernment of things, good and bad. During these wandering days, Vivekananda stayed on king's palaces, as well as the huts of the poor. He came in close contact with the culture of different regions of India and various classes of people in India. Vivekananda observed the imbalance in society and tyranny in the name of caste. He realised the need for a national rejuvenation if India was to survive at all.
  • 14. He reached Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent on 24 December 1892. There, he swam across the sea and started meditating on a lone rock. He thus meditated for three days and said later that he meditated about the past, present and future of India. The rock went on to become the Vivekananda memorial at Kanyakumari. Vivekananda went to Madras and spoke about his plans for India and Hinduism to the young men of Madras.
  • 15. They were impressed by the monk and urged him to go to the United States and represent Hinduism in the World Parliament of Religions. Thus, helped by his friends at Chennai, Bhaskara Sethupathi, Raja of Ramnad and Maharajas of Mysore and Khetri, Vivekananda set out on his journey to the USA.
  • 16. The invite of the conference was actually given to Bhaskara Sethupathi, Raja of Ramnad to attend the World Parliament of Religions at Chicago. But he decided and encouraged Swami Vivekananda was the right person to participate and represent the views of Hinduism in the Parliament of World Religions.
  • 17. In the West Vivekananda was received well at the 1893 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, where he delivered a series of lectures. He also earned wild applause for beginning his address with the famous words, "Sisters and brothers of America." Vivekananda's arrival in the USA has been identified by many to mark the beginning of western interest in Hinduism not as merely an exotic eastern oddity, but as a vital religious and philosophical tradition that might actually have something important to teach the West.
  • 18. Within a few years of the Parliament, he had started Vedantic centres in New York City and London, lectured at major universities and generally kindled western interest in Hinduism. His success was not without controversy, much of it from Christian missionaries of whom he was fiercely critical. After four years of constant touring, lecturing and retreats in the West, he came back to India in the year 1897.
  • 19. Back in India Admirers and devotees of Vivekananda gave him an enthusiastic reception on his return to India. In India, he delivered a series of lectures, and this set of lectures known as "Lectures from Colombo to Almora" is considered to have uplifted the morale of the then downtrodden Indian society. He founded the Ramakrishna Mission. This institution is now one of the largest monastic orders of Hindu society in India.
  • 20. However, he had to bear great criticism from other orthodox Hindus for having travelled in -- what they perceived to be -- the impure West. His contemporaries also questioned his motives, wondering whether the fame and glory of his Hindu evangelism compromised his original monastic vows. His enthusiasm for America and Britain, and his spiritual devotion to his motherland, caused significant tension in his last years. He once again toured the west from January 1899 to December 1900.
  • 21. When he was in America, he had to go through several difficulties, like renting a place, collecting money, cooking his own food, and talking to people who had no idea or had wrong ideas about India and Indian philosophy and culture. In New York, he was not charging people for his classes and he decided not go to the lecture bureaus. To pay the rent, he used to arrange public lectures on week-ends. I was moved when I read about the difficulties and adversities he had to go through to deliver his message.
  • 22. In Texas, someone started shooting around him in order to check whether he was truly identifying himself with the Immortal Self and whether he was free from the fear of death. The rest of his life he dedicated to helping humanity; inspiring people into spiritual path by giving lectures and guidance, training disciples for monastic lives, founding the great Institution - the Ramakrishna Mission.
  • 23. Since then, the Mission has inspired and continues to inspire people in their spiritual quest and has constantly engaged in humanitarian activities helping millions of people. Swami Vivekananda wore out his robust body in the service of humanity.
  • 24. Death On July 4, 1902 at Belur Math near Kolkata, he taught Vedanta philosophy to some pupils in the morning. He had a walk with Swami Premananda, a brother-disciple and gave him instructions concerning the future of the Ramakrishna Math. The same day, Vivekananda left his mortal body at the young age of 39.
  • 25. `
  • 26. The significance of Swami Vivekananda’s message Why is Swami Vivekananda’s message is appropriate for the new millennium? What is the significance of his message? Why a message given a hundred years ago becomes useful for the new millennium? Let us try to find answers from his life and teachings.
  • 27. First, the significance of his message. I think, the most significant contribution of Swami Vivekananda is that he made religion as a scientific search to realize the divinity within. Also, this inner search is grounded in humanity. Combining these two, we can say that he made religion a “humanistic science of the Self.” I would say, a “MetaScience”. From the following points it will be clear how Swami Vivekananda tried to make religion a scientific search within and from that perspective he delivered the message which is appropriate for the new millennium.
  • 28. Realizing the Divinity within is essential Religion should not contradict reason Religion is the Science of the Self Experiments and Experiences The Four Methods to Realize the Divinity Within
  • 29. Karma Yoga : A way to realize one’s own divinity through unselfish actions. Bhakti Yoga : A way to realize one’s own divinity through love of God Raja Yoga : A way to realize one’s own divinity through self control, and Jnana Yoga : A way to realize one’s own divinity through knowledge obtained by reasoning and analysis.
  • 30. Works His books (compiled from lectures given around the world) on the four Yogas (Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga) are very influential and still seen as fundamental texts for anyone interested in the Hindu practice of Yoga. His letters are of great literary and spiritual value. He was also a very good singer and a poet. He had composed many songs including his favorite Kali the Mother.
  • 31. He used humor for his teachings and was also an excellent cook. His language is very free flowing. His own Bengali writings stand testimony to the fact that he believed that words - spoken or written should be for making things easier to understand rather than show off the speaker or writer's knowledge.
  • 32. Quotes "Each soul is potentially divine. The goal is to manifest this divinity within, by controlling nature, external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic control, or philosophy - by one, or more, or all of these - and be free. This is the whole of religion. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details."
  • 33. "The one theme of the Vedanta philosophy is the search after unity. The Hindu mind does not care for the particular; it is always after the general, nay, the universal. "what is it that by knowing which everything else is to be known." That is the one search." "Look upon every man, woman, and everyone as God. You cannot help anyone, you can only serve: serve the children of the Lord, serve the Lord Himself, if you have the privilege."
  • 34. "It may be that I shall find it good to get outside of my body -- to cast it off like a disused garment. But I shall not cease to work! I shall inspire men everywhere, until the world shall know that it is one with God." "Mankind ought to be taught that religions are but the varied expressions of THE RELIGION, which is Oneness, so that each may choose the path that suits him best." " So long as even a single dog in my country is without food, my whole religion will be to feed it."
  • 35. "This is the gist of all worship - to be pure and to do good to others. He who sees Siva (God) in the poor, in the weak, and in the diseased, really worships Siva, and if he sees Siva only in the image, his worship is but preliminary. He who has served and helped one poor man seeing Siva in him, without thinking of his caste, creed, or race, or anything, with him Siva is more pleased than with the man who sees Him only in temples."
  • 36. "Aye , who ever saw money make the man? It is man that always make money. The whole world has been made by the energy of man, by the power of enthusiasm, by the power of faith." "It is a tremendous error to feel helpless. Do not seek help from anyone. We are our own help. If we cannot help ourselves, there is none to help us."
  • 37. "All power is within you, you can do anything and everything. Believe in that, do not believe that you are weak... You can do anything and everything, without even the guidance of any one. All power is there. Stand up and express the divinity with you... Arise, awake, sleep no more. With each of you there is the power to remove all wants and all miseries. Believe in this, that power will be manifested."
  • 38. ""Allow me to call you; brethren, by that sweet name - heirs of immortal bliss - yea,.... Ye are the children of God, the sharers of immortal bliss, holy and perfect beings. Ye divinities on earth - sinners! It is a sin to call a man so; it is standing libel on human nature."
  • 39. "On this basic - being right and doing right the whole world can unite." "We put our hands over our eyes and weep that it is dark." "He alone lives who lives for others. The rest are more dead than alive."
  • 40. “A man may believe in all the churches in the world, he may carry in his head all the sacred books ever written, he may baptize himself in all the rivers of the earth; still, if he has no perception of God, I would class him with the rankest atheist.” “And a man may have never entered a church or a mosque, nor performed any ceremony, but if he feels God within himself and thereby lifted above the vanities of the world, that man is a holy man, a saint, call him what you will.”
  • 41. `
  • 42. UNIVERSAL TEACHINGS SEE GOD IN ALL This is the gist of all worship - to be pure and to do good to others. He who sees Siva in the poor, in the weak, and in the diseased, really worships Siva, and if he sees Siva only in the image, his worship is but preliminary. He who has served and helped one poor man seeing Siva in him, without thinking of his cast, creed, or race, or anything, with him Siva is more pleased than with the man who sees Him only in temples.
  • 43. GOD IS WITHIN YOU It is impossible to find God outside of ourselves. Our own souls contribute all of the divinity that is outside of us. We are the greatest temple. The objectification is only a faint imitation of what we see within ourselves. TRUST COMPLETELY IN GOD Stand up for God; let the world go.
  • 44. PERSEVERE IN YOUR SEARCH FOR GOD   To succeed, you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous will. "I will drink the ocean," says the persevering soul, "at my will mountains will crumble up." Have that sort of energy, that sort of will, work hard, and you will reach the goal. LOVE OF GOD IS ESSENTIAL   Giving up all other thoughts, with the whole mind day and night worship God. Thus being worshipped day and night, He reveals himself and makes His worshippers feel His presence

Sri Aurobindo, an introduction (1872-1950)
The Mother
Sri Aurobindo Gosh
The year was 1907. The freedom movement in India was gathering momentum. Its leader was detained by the police. The poet Rabindranath Tagore paid him a visit after his acquittal, and wrote the now famous lines:
“Rabindranath, O Aurobindo, bows to thee! O friend, my country’s friend, O Voice incarnate, free, Of India’s soul! … The fiery messenger that with the lamp of God. Hath come…
Rabindranath, O Aurobindo, bows to thee.”
In the year 1928, the leader had now left politics and had gone to Pondicherry, where he plunged himself into the practice of Yoga.
The poet Tagore once again paid him a visit and declared: “You have the Word and we are waiting to accept it from you. India will speak through your voice to the world, ‘Hearken to me!’…
Years ago I saw Aurobindo in the atmosphere of his earlier heroic youth and I sang to him: ‘Aurobindo, accept the salutations from Rabindranath’. Today I saw him in a deeper atmosphere of a reticent richness of wisdom and again sang to him in silence: ‘Aurobindo, accept the salutations from Rabindranath!’”
How does one describe or speak about such a personality? Sri Aurobindo has been called a scholar, a literary critic, a philosopher, a revolutionary, a poet, a yogi and a rishi. He was all these and much more. To have even a glimpse of the true Sri Aurobindo, we have to turn to the Mother: “What Sri Aurobindo represents in the world's history is not a teaching, not even a revelation; it is a decisive action direct from the Supreme.”
In fact, Sri Aurobindo declared, in no uncertain terms that nobody could write his biography and added: “Neither you nor anyone else knows anything at all of my life; it has not been on the surface for men to see.”
But he was not altogether averse to this effort and even made corrections when some biographers made the attempt. In the process the veil that hid the divine mystery was lifted a little.

The Mother
The Mother, an introduction (1878-1973)
Today, Sri Aurobindo Ashram is known as a great centre of spiritual endeavour. People from all over the world come to Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry), in South India, to bathe in an atmosphere full of peace, light and joy, to live a life of sadhana and yoga, to imbibe a new spiritual force that can embrace and perfect life.
And the word they hear the most in the Ashram is ‘Mother’. From the beginning, Sri Aurobindo entrusted the Mother with full material and spiritual charge of the Ashram. Everything in the Ashram is her creation; every initiative draws inspiration from her and moves towards her vision.
The Mother beautifully summarizes her mission thus: “…my only aim in life is to give a concrete form to Sri Aurobindo’s great teaching and in his teaching he reveals that all the nations are essentially one and meant to express the Divine Unity upon earth through an organised and harmonious diversity”. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother strove together to embody and manifest upon earth this Divine Consciousness, with the Ashram as the starting point.
It was the Mother who, along with Sri Aurobindo, planted the seeds of a new way of life founded on this higher consciousness. It was her drive, her force, her guidance that made things happen. From the smallest insignificant detail to the overseeing of every aspect of maintaining the Ashram, from interacting with the children of the Centre of Education to the supervising of the athletic competitions in the sports ground—she was there, fully present, to see that everything is raised to its utmost perfection.
Just as Sri Aurobindo once said that his life “has not been on the surface for man to see”, it is indeed equally difficult to describe the Mother’s life as well. And yet, we may mention a few significant dates and features of her extraordinary life.
